SpaceX AR Boarding Experience

A speculative AR boarding experience for SpaceX, replacing the traditional boarding pass with a credit card–sized physical key that reveals live travel and mission data through a device. The system uses biometric gating and progressive disclosure to stay secure and legible in mixed-reality conditions.

Challenge

Space travel requires absolute precision, yet SpaceX's brand demands a sense of awe. The challenge was designing a core AR UI flow that secures sensitive passenger and mission data, prevents information overload, and communicates critical details instantly, even under pressure.

[ 02 ]
Audience
ISS passengers, mission operations staff, and stakeholders evaluating next-generation travel documentation.
[ 03 ]
Discovery Inputs
Brand references, mission data requirements, AR legibility constraints, and progressive-disclosure modeling.
[ KEY INSIGHTS ]
01
Sensitive passenger and mission data must stay gated until authentication completes
02
AR interfaces fail when information density competes with an unpredictable background
03
Awe and operational credibility can coexist if motion signals precision, not spectacle

The Approach

Progressive Disclosure

The experience was structured into three intentional states, each unlocking more information only when appropriate. Authentication is a secure entry point with no data visible. The Boarding Pass surfaces essential travel details at a glance. The Manifest opens into deep mission and vehicle telemetry. Progressive disclosure reduced cognitive load while reinforcing trust and security.

Paragraph Selection

To explore SpaceX's AR boarding experience, I designed a visual system focused on clarity, precision, and operational trust. The system uses a restrained color palette, high-contrast typography, and modular UI components to ensure critical information remains legible and consistent across all stages of the experience.

The locked entry state shows no passenger or mission data until biometric authentication completes, so a lost or scanned key reveals nothing on its own.
